My Travels with Bill Haley
Bandleader Al Rappa today
I sang and played bass, organ and trumpet with many notable
bands around Philadelphia, Pa., in the 1950s. Bill Haley
called me on several occasions to fill in when one of his
regular musicians couldn't make the gig.
My fill-ins became more frequent and soon
evolved into recurring gigs as a member of the Comets. In
1956, I recorded bass and trumpet on Bill's
"Strictly Instrumental" album on the Decca label.
Two cuts
— "Joey's Song" and "Skokiaan" — became
hits. That's when I started touring internationally as a member
of Bill Haley
and His Comets.
My passports tell the story...
